It divides historic Southwark in two. It was originally the Roman road Watling Street and in the mediæval period was the site of famous Inns such as the Tabard, the George and the White Hart. St. Thomas' Hospital lay to the east next to the modern Guy's Hospital and St Mary Overie Monastery to the west. Also west of the road was the notorious criminal enclave of The Mint. Borough Market has its main entrance at the London Bridge end.

Amenities and Features

Borough is now a thriving cosmopolitan area of London, with many restaurants (such as the Hiba Restaurant and Tas), bars and the well-known food market Borough Market. The street also has many cafés and food shops including Sainsbury's Local. Just off the road is the Old Operating Theatre, Museum and Herb Garret, which is the oldest operating theatre in Britain and now a museum. Public Houses include:
